This comprehensive collection documents the lengthy legal and political career of Maryland Attorney General Josiah Bayly, as well as the prolific medical practices of his son, Dr. Alexander Hamilton Bayly. Simultaneously, the collection documents family education practices, and thoughts on the American Civil War through scrapbooks and correspondence. Leisure activities are observed through a variety of fictional publications from the Library of Select Novels, and the Shakespeare Quarto Illustrated. The Dorchester County Civil Rights collection documents the Civil Rights movement occurring in Cambridge, Maryland from 1958 -1990 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1961 – 1970. Materials include newspaper clippings, political literature, and campaign materials relating to the Civil Rights movement in Cambridge as well as three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings related to civil rights demonstrations in Cambridge. The scrapbooks were maintained by Thomas Applegarth, Jr., a member of the anti-protest Dorchester Business and Citizens Association.

This typescript account was written by Father Canisius Hinde of Whitefriars Hall of the Carmelite Church in Washington, D.C. His report details the involvement of members of the Carmelite Church in the protests and demonstrations in Cambridge, Maryland on May 11, 1964. The five page report (with an additional newspaper clipping xerox) offers a first-hand account from a demonstrator whose account concluded with the following post-script: "I am sure some day a book will be written on how these freedom songs accomplish ends that seem almost contradictory...instilling courage, solidarity and purpose. They are eloquent in asserting right and justice and yet they mellow the spirits on both ends of the bayonet and club in the direction of fraternal love."

Included are two deeds to and from John Wheatley dated 1893 and 1911; a Maryland Public School Register from Dorchester County dating from 1911 to 1916, including loose notes and items; an education publication from 1929 entitled "The Sea Surf"; a 1939 publication entitled "New York World's Fair Views"; a 1940 US Department of Commerce publication entitled "Digest of Civil Air Regulations for Pilots"; and several Cambridge newspapers (Cambridge Record, Daily Banner, Democrat and News, and an issue of Philadelphia Record) from 1908 to 1940.
